Project Overview

The Nutrien Farmer’s Companion App helps farmers track rainfall, GDD, and nutrient data for smarter crop decisions. Facing legacy issues and platform challenges, we adopted a design-first approach — rebuilding the UX, design system, and structure to create a scalable, user-validated experience across Android and iOS.

The Problem

The original app struggled with usability and technical limitations — from broken calculators and inaccurate GPS data to poor accessibility and inconsistent UI patterns. These issues caused user frustration and reduced trust in key features like the Rainfall Tracker and GDD calculators.

Strategic Approach

We recommended a two-phase approach:

Phase 1 (2023-2024)
Redesign the app experience and architecture in Figma — mapping every feature, flow, and component before redevelopment.

Phase 2 (2024+)
Begin development using a scalable framework informed by validated prototypes.

This “design-first” model allowed us to fix immediate issues, rethink the app structure, and establish a robust UX foundation for future functionality.

Research & Discovery

We collaborated with Nutrien’s Customer Experience team and surveyed farmers to identify pain points and feature needs. Competitive and heuristic analyses revealed key UX issues like broken navigation and poor accessibility. Insights showed farmers wanted clearer data, saved results, tutorials, and better readability for greater confidence in the app.

Strategy & Planning

We built a scalable, future-ready app ecosystem with a unified navigation model, contextual tools like tips and expert validation, and a flexible, accessible design system. By mapping user journeys and modular structures, we ensured the app can evolve without compromising usability or consistency.

Wireframing & Prototyping

In Figma, we developed wireframes that simplified calculator flows, improved navigation, and added contextual tutorials and tips. Redesigned selectors and location tools ensured cross-platform consistency, and prototypes were tested with stakeholders and farmers to validate usability and flow clarity.

Design & Refinement

Using research and feedback, we built a modern, accessible design system focused on readability and scalability. The updated UI introduced a robust component library, improved color contrast, clearer data visualizations, and enhanced accessibility features like adjustable text and dark mode—creating a cohesive, future-ready experience for farmers.

Smarter, Reliable Calculators and Contextual Tools for Farmers

The app’s calculators previously suffered from bugs, inconsistent flows, and confusing help prompts, which made tasks like tracking GDD, rainfall, and nutrient data frustrating and error-prone. To address this, we redesigned each calculator with step-by-step guidance, contextual tips, and clearer input validation, ensuring users could confidently complete calculations. We also introduced new advanced calculators and expanded tools, including data-saving features, expert validation, and integrated tutorials, giving farmers a more robust, reliable, and intuitive suite of decision-making tools within a single, cohesive experience.

Component Library

To support a unified and future-ready app experience, I built a component library that ensures visual consistency, accessibility, and flexibility across all screens. Each component—from calculators and navigation elements to pop-ups and data visualizations—was designed to be modular, reusable, and adaptable for both iOS and Android. This library not only streamlined the design and prototyping process but also laid the foundation for scalable updates, new features, and a cohesive user experience across the entire app ecosystem.

Outcome & Impact

The design-first approach provided Nutrien with a validated UX foundation and clear design documentation to guide development. Key results include a unified, scalable navigation framework, a robust component-based design system, improved accessibility and user trust, and a modernized visual identity. The redesigned app delivers a human-centered, future-proof experience that empowers farmers with clarity, confidence, and actionable insights.
